Biography

The Interpreting:

I began my interpreter training in 1988 at University of New Hampshire’s interpreter training program. In 1991 I transferred to Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) and graduated in 1993. I have specialized in different genres of interpreting including medical, counseling, addiction treatment, and video relay service interpreting. I also have extensive experience interpreting in business, college educational and other training settings as well as other opportunities as they present themselves if I am qualified.

As an interpreter I strive to continually challenge and improve myself. I do this by honing existing areas of skill and knowledge, learning new ones and revisiting ones that proved difficult in the past.

I have earned three certifications – the Certificate of Interpretation (CI) in 1998, the Certificate of Transliteration (CT) in 2002, and the National Interpreter Certificate – Master Level (NIC-M) in 2004.

The Etc.

In addition to interpreting I offer my service to other interpreters in the form of mentor, workshop presenter, and instructor.

I have attended Northeastern University in Boston twice. The first time was through the Teaching Interpreting Educators and Mentors online (TIEM online) program which focuses on mentoring ASL-English interpreters and training people to become mentors. The second time I earned a Masters of Education specializing in interpreter pedagogy; a teaching degree that specially qualifies me to teach interpreters. My research can be found here. I taught at Seattle Central Community College’s interpreter training program from 2009 until its closure in 2013.

Since 2001 I have been researching areas of interpreting and linguistics and putting them in presentable format to offer as workshops to other interpreters and interested deaf people.

Additionally I have published three books – professional journals about interpreting. The first one is out of print and the copyright has reverted back to me. I am in the process of updating it now and will hopefully be self-publishing it and distributing it through this site. I updated my second book and the 2nd edition is now available (see home page).

In my personal life I am happily married to a childhood friend and we adore the company of our animals. We have just moved back to New England after 20 years away.
